    John Murphy

    John Murphy is Head of School at Bodine School. Mr. Murphy is a highly regarded educational leader with more than twenty-five years of experience as an administrator. Mr. Murphy received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Rhodes College, and a master's degree in Educational Administration from the University of Memphis. A life-long educator, Mr. Murphy began his career as a high school science teacher at St. Agnes Academy and went on to serve as Dean of St. Dominic School. His experience and effective communication skills provide Bodine with a leader possessing the essential qualities to sustain, grow, and expand the unique mission of Bodine School, always with the best interest of the children, and the future of Bodine, in mind.

    When away from his duties at Bodine School, Mr. Murphy enjoys spending time with his wife Melanie, son, Matt, daughter, Meg, and grandson, Will. He and Melanie enjoy cooking together and can often be found in the kitchen trying out new recipes.

    Michel Allen oversees development at Bodine School. Ms. Allen has over ten years experience in development and sales. She has a double major from Denver University and a master's degree from New York University.

    When Ms. Allen is away from Bodine, she enjoys taking her son to the Children's Museum of Memphis and The Art Project. Ms. Allen loves to travel and has a passion for all things that make Memphis a better place!

    Melissa Benson is very pleased to begin her fifth year at Bodine School. In addition to her role at Bodine, Mrs. Benson is a doctoral student at the University of Memphis in the Special Education Department with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis. Mrs. Benson enjoys bringing new ideas into the classroom to compliment the methodology used at Bodine School.  

    Outside of school, Mrs. Benson can be found enjoying family time, horseback riding, or playing with her dogs. She and her husband have a son who is beginning his fourth year in Rhodes College’s five-year biomedical engineering program and a daughter who is beginning her freshman year at St. Louis University.

    Reece Daugherty

    Reece Daugherty became a member of Bodine School's faculty in 2010 and in subsequent years taught at both the elementary and middle school level. In addition, Mr. Daugherty also held the roles of Lead Teacher and Assistant Head of Lower School. Mr. Daugherty now serves as Director of Admissions & Outplacement.

    Mr. Daugherty holds a Master of Arts degree in Teaching and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, both from Christian Brothers University. Mr. Daugherty is an Associate Level member of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and he also holds membership in the Academic Language Therapy Association as a Certified Academic Language Therapist.

    Prior to joining Bodine, Mr. Daugherty served at Lichterman Nature Center as a Teacher/Naturalist. In his leisure time, Mr. Daugherty enjoys relaxing with his dogs and reading books about education and wildlife. He also enjoys caring for his collection of scaly pets, including two lizards and a snake.

    Lyle Hull Davis

    Dr. Lyle Hull Davis is Director of Education at Bodine School. Over the past decade, Dr. Davis has conducted research studies pertaining to children's language and literacy development within clinical and classroom-based contexts. Additionally, she has designed training materials, computer-based evaluation tools and content for a major educational software company. Her present focus has been on designing and implementing research-based diagnostics and remediation programs.

    Dr. Davis received her doctorate from Northwestern University in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She holds a master's degree in Special Education was from the University of Virginia, and she completed her undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University in Special Education and Cognitive Studies.

    Outside of teaching and learning, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Ted, and three children, Mason, Carrington and Tucker. Dr. Davis retired from playing lacrosse and soccer years ago, but still enjoys coaching, running and occasionally shooting on random soccer or lacrosse goals. When time permits, she spends as much time as possible outdoors, playing tennis, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and skiing (water or snow). Her two labs frequently join her and her family on various expeditions.

    Sandy Hoots

    Sandy Hoots is the Executive Assistant at Bodine School. She joined Bodine in July 2012, as the Administrative Assistant and was promoted to Executive Assistant in July 2015. 

    Sandy has worn many hats during her 38 years of professional experience. Besides serving as an assistant to Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Directors and Heads of School at several institutions, she has worked as an assistant to many Directors of Development and has managed databses for the past 16 years.

    When Sandy is away from work, she enjoys spending time with her family, watching television and sitting in her rocking chair on her front porch. She also enjoys judging beauty pageants. She has judged pageants on the local, state, and national level. She also has an obsession with anything related to Christmas. Every December for the past 32 years, Sandy and family have opened their home to families and children all over the country to visit Santa.

    Krista L. Johnson

    Dr. Krista L. Johnson is Director of The Erika Center at Bodine School. Prior to joining the Bodine team, Dr. Johnson worked privately as a remediation and learning specialist. With over a decade of working one-on-one with children and adolescents, Dr. Johnson is able to devise personalized remediation plans to fit each student’s unique learning needs. Her background and research in cognitive and auditory neuroscience allows Dr. Johnson to approach the multi-sensory remediation of her students from both a clinical and research-based point-of-view. 

    Dr. Johnson received her doctorate from Northwestern University in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She also holds a masters in audiology and hearing science, a masters in learning disabilities, and has completed a certificate in cognitive science. She completed her undergraduate degree at Arizona State University in Speech and Hearing Sciences. Additionally, Dr. Johnson is working to complete her Associate Level training from the Academy of Orton-Gillingham.

    Susan Loveless joined Bodine in 2015. As Administrative Assistant, Ms. Loveless plays an enormous part in making sure the front office and the school as a whole run smoothly. Ms. Loveless is a lifetime Memphian who was employed with Morgan Keegan (now Raymond James) for over 33 years. She loves reading mysteries and being a grandmother. Ms. Loveless has two grown children and one grandchild.

    Peter Saunders

    Peter Saunders has just joined Bodine School as Director of Technology. Peter has been teaching in independent schools for over 15 years and most recently taught at the Breck School in Minneapolis, where he served as Director of Academic Technology. Peter has also taught English and Theatre and has coached Mock Trial at the high school level. Previous independent schools include St. Albans, National Cathedral School, Breck School, and Hotchkiss.

    Peter has an MFA from the University of Portland (Oregon) and a BA from St. Lawrence University in upstate New York. He is also a certified Google Educator.

    Outside of work, Peter loves to cook, and spend time with his family.

    Loie Watkins

    Loie Watkins is the Director of Finance and Operations at Bodine School. She joined Bodine in September 2014. Prior to this role, she worked as a financial analyst for International Paper for 9 years and recently as finance manager at Mt. Vernon Church for 5 years.

    Mrs. Watkins received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Memphis and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from Tennessee State University in Nashville.

    Mrs. Watkins values spending time with her husband Melvin and their three sons, Joshua, Isaiah and Daniel. She also enjoys spending time with relatives and friends, relaxing at the spa, traveling and taking on home projects. She serves at her church as director for women and children ministries. Her passion is to help and inspire others.

    Jenny Giltner is a new member is the Bodine family. She recently moved to Memphis from Akron, Ohio. She attended University of Dayton, where she got her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. She met additional requirements in order to attain a Dyslexia certificate along with her degree. Miss Giltner is very excited to experience her first year of teaching at Bodine. Outside of school, Miss Giltner enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, and traveling.

    Sara Hill is a native Memphian who graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville with a degree in Speech/Language Pathology. Ms. Hill loves reading, watching movies, and walking her dog. She is excited to begin her second year of teaching at Bodine!

    Rebecca Hall is a new member of the Bodine family. She is originally from Little Rock, Arkansas and moved to Memphis to pursue a degree in Liberal Studies at Christian Brothers University. In addition, Ms. Hall is currently continuing her education at CBU to attain a Master of Arts in Teaching in Special Education.
    Ms. Hall values spending time with her family and friends. When she has time to spare, she enjoys going to sporting events. Her favorite teams include the Arkansas Razorbacks, Memphis Redbirds, and Memphis Grizzlies. She enjoys traveling to new places, watching a good movie, and playing soccer or basketball. Ms. Hall is thrilled to begin her first year at Bodine and is excited for what the year holds!

    Jennifer Prather

    Mrs. Prather holds master's and bachelor's degrees from the University of Florida in Elementary Education with a specialization in special education. In addition, she has completed 30 hours above her master's degree with an emphasis on reading instruction.

    Mrs. Prather has 25 years of teaching experience, twelve years as a special education teacher and thirteen years in general education. She has taught in three states: Florida, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Mrs. Prather holds National Board Certification in Special Education.

    Mrs. Prather has been married for 27 years and has two daughters, two cats, and a dog. She loves spending time with her family, reading, and taking nature walks.

    Mrs. Reed graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She received her Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Reading from Christian Brothers University. Mrs. Reed joined Bodine's faculty in 2014. Prior to teaching at Bodine School, Mrs. Reed taught in both public and private schools. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, spending time with her family and dog, and traveling.

    Rebecca Semler

    Rebecca Semler has been a teacher at Bodine School since 2011 and has taught both fourth and fifth grades. Prior to her work at Bodine, Mrs. Semler worked in inner city Memphis teaching kindergarten, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Mrs. Semler holds a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Freed-Hardeman University as well as a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a Professional Education minor from Oklahoma Christian University. Furthermore, she is a member of Professional Educators of Tennessee as well as an Associate Level member of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators.

    Mrs. Semler values spending time with her husband Cody as well as various relatives and friends. She enjoys volunteering with her church, where she teaches Bible classes as well as mentors children in the Children’s Ministry. She has a special place in her heart for mission work and has visited Ghana, West Africa, seven times in order to work with the children at the Village of Hope School and Orphanage. In her spare time, Mrs. Semler enjoys reading, cooking, crafting, participating in Do-It- Herself classes, spending time outdoors, and watching various sports, especially football and basketball.     This will be Karah Watkins' first year with Bodine. Ms. Watkins attended the University of Memphis to earn her Bachelor of Arts in English, concentrating in English as a Second Language and Linguistics. She is currently continuing her education with a Master of Arts in Teaching at Union University. This will be Ms. Watkins' second year of teaching. Outside of work, Ms. Watkins likes to spend her time outdoors riding and competing horses, biking, or hiking. She also enjoys traveling and playing the piano.

    Ms. Gillespie graduated from the University of Memphis with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in Teaching All Learners (K-6 and SPED K-12) with a minor in Sociology. Prior to joining Bodine, Ms. Gillespie taught 6th grade math at Houston Middle School and 5th and 6th grade SPED at Jenks East Intermediate in Tulsa, OK. Ms. Gillespie just recently moved back to Memphis and is very excited to join the Bodine faculty.

    Outside of school, Ms. Gillespie is an advisor for her sorority, Sigma Kappa. She also enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She loves going to Memphis Tigers football and basketball games as well as Grizzle and Redbirds games. During her leisure time, you might find her working on a Sudoku puzzle or reading.

    Sheri James grew up in Southeast Michigan and earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Eastern Michigan University. She then worked full or part time at various levels of public education while having three children and earning a Master of Arts in Education with a Reading Specialist Endorsement from the University of Michigan. After graduate school, she worked for three years teaching developmental reading and writing classes at a local community college. In 2007, her family moved to Olive Branch, MS, and in 2011 she joined the faculty at Bodine School. Since then, Mrs. James has completed both SMILA I and II as well as earned Classroom Educator certification through the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practioners and Educators.

    Mrs. James is an active member of her local church, she loves spending time with her family. She considers it a privilege to educate and influence children.

    Michelle Gaines has a professional background teaching in independent and public schools and in General and Special Education settings.  Through her corps membership experience in Special Education with Teach for America - Memphis and as a founding Special Education Teacher of a North Memphis KIPP charter school, Michelle has developed a deep passion for equity in education, including working to continually meet the individual needs of diverse learners.  Since joining the Bodine faculty in 2013, Michelle has served as an Elementary Classroom Teacher, as well as a Teacher Mentor and Advocate for Community Outreach through her work with Bodine School’s Erika Center.  Currently, Michelle serves as Program Coordinator for the Erika Center’s Teacher Training Initiative.

    Michelle holds a master's degree in Education from Christian Brothers University in Memphis and a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of California at Berkeley.  She is also an Associate Level member of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, as well as working towards her certification as a Certified Master Trainer in the Yoshimoto Orton-Gillingham Approach.

    In her time away from Bodine, Michelle enjoys traveling, art appreciation, and spending time outdoors with her husband, Jonathan, and dog, Bianca.  Mr. and Mrs. Gaines look forward to the arrival of their first child in September of 2016.

    Marko Pavlovic

    Marko Pavlovic holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Nis, Serbia, a Bachelor of Science from Union University, and a Masters of Arts from Union University. A professional soccer player in Serbia, Mr. Pavlovic came to the US when he was 21 to play soccer for Union. After earning his master's degree, Mr. Pavlovic taught at Southwind High School and then at Central High School. He now serves as Bodine's P.E. teacher and also manages Bodine's soccer team. Outside of Bodine, he also coaches for Soccer Ole.

    Penny Ray is in her 15th year of teaching music and her 7th year at Bodine. Mrs. Ray also teaches music part time at Rossville Christian Academy. Prior to working at Bodine, Mrs. Ray taught at various private and public schools in Tennessee and Arkansas including ECS-Fisherville and Immaculate Conception School in Memphis. Mrs. Ray earned a degree in Music Education from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, AR. She is certified to teach vocal music K-12 and has been certified to teach Orff Level 1 and 2 music methods. Mrs. Ray also teaches private piano lessons. Mrs. Ray was born and raised in Conway, AR. She has been married for 19 years and has two daughters that are in 9th and 5th grade. She is active in her church and helps lead the children's choir there. She enjoys going to the movies to watch sci-fi and action movies, traveling on vacation to various places, and traveling to Arkansas to visit her family.

    Pam Stein served as Bodine School’s librarian from 1994-2004. During her six-year retirement, she could be found at Bodine as a substitute teacher and auction volunteer. Mrs. Stein returned to Bodine as a middle school classroom teacher in 2010. In the fall of 2013, she once again became the librarian as well as the middle school social studies teacher. Mrs. Stein is currently the librarian and teaches elementary social studies. She also collaborates with classroom teachers as she works with small groups using the Orton-Gillingham method. Mrs. Stein is also Bodine’s yearbook advisor.

    Mrs. Stein holds a Master of Science in Instruction Curriculum with an endorsement as a School Library Information Specialist, PreK-12, from the University of Memphis and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Memphis State University. Mrs. Stein has completed SMILA and Orton-Gillingham training.

    In her spare time, Mrs. Stein enjoys photography, reading, writing, scrapbooking, and other paper crafting. She and her husband, Todd, love to travel, care for rescued pets, and spend time with their families, children, and grandchildren.
