October is Dyslexia Awareness Month and it is important to acknowledge the challenges faced by people with dyslexia. For those who can read this message with ease, it is a reminder to be grateful for the ability to connect letters to sounds and create meaning. However, for 15-20% of the population, dyslexia is a barrier to reading and accessing their education. Dyslexia is a neurological learning difference that presents specific challenges in reading, writing, and spelling, while also bringing gifts in creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, spatial design, and problem-solving mindsets. This month, let us spread awareness about dyslexia and support those who face these challenges every day.

Dyslexia Awareness Month Special Events

October 9-13 – Fall Break (Bodine School closed)

 

October 15 – Dyslexia Awareness Day – Although the entire month is dedicated to dyslexia awareness, the 15th was chosen to acknowledge the 1-in-5 individuals who display characteristics of dyslexia.

  • The TN Chapter of the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) will also provide an open-house style dyslexia information session with the Dyslexia Simulation Lab available at each hour during the screenings.

October 31 – Dyslexia is My Superpower Day – Students can dress up as their favorite superhero to celebrate dyslexia as a superpower.

Don’t miss this opportunity to better understand the professional partnerships that ensure Bodine School remediates dyslexia thoroughly and with expertise. This panel-style event will include a psychologist, an Orton-Gillingham Academy Fellow, Speech and Language Pathologist, a transition school representative, and educational consultants. We will address your questions about the role of psychological testing, speech and language services, the Orton-Gillingham Academy, and what to expect from schools and colleges after Bodine.

Dyslexia Resource Fair: Friday, October 20th, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

 

The Erika Center at Bodine School, in partnership with Decoding Dyslexia Tennessee, the International Dyslexia Association, and the Academic Language Therapy Association of Tennessee ALTA, is proud to announce the Dyslexia Resource Fair at Bodine School.

This event is aimed at families and community members who are interested in learning more about dyslexia and the resources available to them.

The fair will take place on Friday, October 20, and will feature information tables from each organization, as well as door prizes throughout the night, including a discounted seat in Bodine’s Summer Reading Program. Attendees will also be treated to Marcos’s pizza and desserts.

Children can enjoy activities such as face painting, coloring sheets, and access to our playground. Best of all, admission is free! Come join us and learn more about dyslexia and the resources available to support those impacted by it.

FREE Literacy Screenings from The Erika Center on October 21

In honor of Dyslexia Awareness Month, The Erika Center at Bodine School will be offering free dyslexia screenings for students grades 1-4 on Saturday, October 21. Screenings can be a helpful first step for families wondering if they should pursue a full psychoeducational testing and evaluation. While these screenings are free on October 21 only, space is limited for this opportunity.

ALTA Dyslexia Simulation Lab and Information Sessions on the Hour

During the screenings, The TN Chapter of the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) invites you to an open-house style Dyslexia Information Session with dyslexia simulation activities. The event is FREE, open to all, and will be held at Bodine School every hour from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Bring your questions and a friend to learn more about dyslexia.

Bodine School’s most treasured event, Community Leader Breakfast, will be held on Friday, October 27 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Students lead tours of our campus and our program from their perspectives. Dyslexia is my Superpower Day: Tuesday, October 31

Bodine students will have the opportunity to embrace their dyslexia as a superpower on Tuesday, October 31st by dressing up as their favorite superhero. This fun and empowering event will highlight the unique strengths and talents of students with dyslexia, and provide a positive and inclusive environment for all students. We encourage all students to participate and show off their superhero costumes!
